As I delved into the complexities of climate finance and philanthropy, I was struck by the pressing questions surrounding how movements, corporations, and foundations perceive and engage with climate finance. It became evident to me that we need a paradigm shift in our perspective. Climate philanthropy shouldn't just be an \"ethical side hustle\" but a profound moral obligation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout New York Climate Week, it was evident that traditional finance and philanthropy is not going to be enough to meaningfully respond to the climate crisis. We are in a pivotal moment, where \u201cbusiness as usual\u201d will not solve the systemic injustices that have driven the climate crisis. Many people see funding work in the intersection of justice and climate, as an \u201cethical side hustle\u201d but we need to have a paradigm shift in the way we think about philanthropy so we recognize that financially supporting movements is a moral obligation <\/span>more<\/span><\/i> than an economical decision.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, we often place the obligation of funding climate justice issues on philanthropy but it is worthwhile to note that in the US (there\u2019s not a lot of data in Canada on these numbers), $400 billion dollars sit in philanthropy, while $65 trillion dollars sit in US capital markets. To put this in perspective, philanthropy only accounts for 5% of the funding in the \u201cworld of finance.\u201d\u00a0 It's clear to me now that while philanthropy has its place, it alone cannot address the vast financial needs of our world. We must reimagine our systems with justice and equity at the forefront.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cette discussion m'a permis de contextualiser le financement mondial, en expliquant que 75 % du financement pour le climat se fait sous forme de pr\u00eats, tandis que seulement 25 % est fourni sous forme de subventions. Par ailleurs, ces pr\u00eats sont assortis \u00e0 des taux d'int\u00e9r\u00eat \u00e9lev\u00e9s ; cette disparit\u00e9 flagrante entre les pr\u00eats et les subventions fait peser sur les pays du Sud un poids consid\u00e9rable en les obligeant \u00e0 d\u00e9pendre de ces pr\u00eats pour s'adapter \u00e0 la crise climatique. En fait, en 2021, les pays du Sud devront rembourser cinq fois plus de dettes que les pays du Nord, et ces relations se renforcent mutuellement et enracinent davantage les gens dans le syst\u00e8me. La justice ne peut pas \u00eatre d\u00e9velopp\u00e9e sur la base de structures financi\u00e8res capitalistes et lucratives.<\/span><\/p>\n

Notre adoration pour les march\u00e9s financiers et leurs mesures au d\u00e9triment de la dignit\u00e9 humaine me semblent \u00e9trange. Je me suis moi-m\u00eame rendu coupable de cela.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pendant le panel des r\u00e9ponses furent apport\u00e9 \u00e0 ma crise existentielle on nous proposa [au public] diverses solutions pour aller de l'avant en tant que mouvement :<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Cultivate and nourish frontline relationships and accountability.<\/b>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    We are so quick to trust the \u201cfinance people\u201d to set climate targets for us, yet it is people who are on the frontlines that are most attuned to the problem and the solutions. We need to understand that proximity <\/span>est <\/span><\/i>evidence, and to stay in true accountability to movements is to build programs, streams, etc. in harmony with them. You would never try to fix a car with an accountant, you would recruit the mechanic.<\/span><\/p>\n

    <\/span><\/p>\n

    1. Allow yourself to undergo self-transformation and provide support to those who would like to undergo the same.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Nous devons amener les gens \u00e0 participer au mouvement. Nous ne parlons peut-\u00eatre pas la m\u00eame langue, mais il y a un app\u00e9tit pour le changement et nous devons commencer \u00e0 \u00e9duquer les gens sur le lien entre leurs d\u00e9cisions financi\u00e8res et l\u2019impact du syst\u00e8me bancaire et financier sur le climat. Dans tout le pays, les particuliers les plus fortun\u00e9s, les conseillers, les comptables, etc. sont tous aux prises avec des tensions entre leurs obligations l\u00e9gales et leurs valeurs.       1. Invest in resistance.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        \"Soyez un vecteur de changement, pas un conciliateur\".<\/span><\/p>\n

        \u00a0The stakes of not actively protesting and stopping fossil fuel exploration and expansion, and the structures that perpetuate harm are clear. To give an example, in Atlanta, <\/span>organizers protesting towards the building of Cop City<\/span><\/a> and the infringement on Indigenous lands, collected 116,000 signatures for a petition against the project (to compare, the latest mayoral election only fostered 70,000 votes). At the same time, proponents of the project are coming after the frontlines\u2019 ability to participate in political pursuits, going after migrant workers, land defenders, and marginalized peoples.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        There are many stories that parallel this story, and it\u2019s time for people with deep wallets to realize that if we do not start supporting the resistance work, then our dollars become a vote for maintaining the status quo - and protecting the abusers of power.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        <\/span><\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Invest in building<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Movements and organizing often are mislabeled as \u201cscrappy and stupid.\u201d This is not the case as many frontline movements are well-organized, world-building, stable, strong, and strategic. This is a narrative people are told so that the powerful can convince civic society to associate frontline activism with violence and \u201cprimitive\u201d behaviour, so as to diminish the work happening on the frontlines within the grassroots. The political and social infrastructure of social movements are strong, and they are growing - and we need to invest in the sustainability of these strong grassroots movements to scale and catalyze the coalitions that will bring about change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>

          Towards the end of my time in New York, I spent a lot more time sharing my learnings from this panel and advocating for funding for youth - especially those on the frontlines. I met incredible people at the <\/span>Youth Climate Justice Fund<\/span><\/a> launch, and was excited to see many familiar faces.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
